European Film Festival of Atlanta Opening Ceremony

April 6, 2022 at 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The first-ever European Film Festival of Atlanta will open this Friday, May 6th at 7pm at Plaza Atlanta! For the official Opening Ceremony, we will hear opening remarks from the representatives of the 11 countries involved in the festival — Belgium, the Republic of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Netherlands – alongside the directors of Alliance Française and Goethe-Zentrum.

Following the opening ceremony, as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian nation under attack, the European Film Festival of Atlanta 2022 will screen the award-winning Ukrainian documentary The Earth Is Blue As an Orange (2020) by Iryna Tsilyk. In a prerecorded video, director Iryna Tsilyk will introduce the film and highlight its newfound significance. Reception to follow the screening.

Synopsis: To cope with the daily trauma of living in a war-zone, Anna and her children are making a film together about their life in the most surreal surroundings. Winner of the Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, The Earth is Blue as an Orange stands not only as a remarkable document of the Russo-Ukrainian War through the lens – literally – of this family’s creative process, but as an optimistic testament to the power of art and beauty in the face of destruction.
